Define PPS_API_VERS_1 is used into configure:

   giometti at hulk[98%]:~/linuxpps/ntpd/ntp-dev-4.2.0b-rc1-20060306$ grep PPS_API_VERS_1 configure
   #ifdef PPS_API_VERS_1

Yes. The best think to do is modifying the defines as already
suggested before and check if the system is still unreliable.

I don't think procfs modifications may corrupt the system.
