[LinuxPPS] PPS signal generator example?

Hi all,

Is there a simple howto for using the parallel port (or gpio) PPS signal
generator somewhere?
I find only guides/howtos for PPS input mostly...

I want to have a machine (Ubuntu 12.04lts or similar) that is kept on time
with NTP and outputs PPS to a large wall-clock with either a PPS or a
pulse-per-minute input.

Is support for pps_ge_parport already compiled in to most modern kernels?
or would I have to compile my own kernel?
